OMBRE DRESSER tips tricks and graduation

Have you wanted to paint an Ombre dresser?
Have you ever asked why its called Ombre?
Ombre in French translates to *shadow or
shade* ... so that explains a little.

I think the painted Ombre looks really good on mid-century dressers.

I had the pleasure to paint a mid-century Ombre dresser for a new member of the family.

It wasnt hard to do but I found it tricky to figure out where each color should start and stop. What I
mean by that is what color goes on what divider, or should the drawer color go on the side panels or
should it be white. To answer a lot of my own questions I referred to online photos of dressers
already painted in an Ombre theme. I took note of what I did and didnt like and mapped out my plan
from there. Everyones dresser will be different so starting with a plan will definitely help you.

To get the different shades of color I worked with ASCP Florence and Pure White.
The principle I worked with was to start at the bottom with the strongest color and work
my way up mixing more white into the last color I used.

IMPORTANT TIP:
I did not keep any extra paint of each color but made sure I had full coverage before remixing.

first attempt
Unfortunately I didnt think my color graduation was strong enough through the middle
(see the above photo)
so I took drawer three and repainted it much darker, moved drawer four up, and the now
darker drawer three became the new bottom drawer. Did you follow that?
You cant always do this with every dresser but I was lucky and it worked for me.

Consider as long as you have a nice paint job on the dressers outer frame you can repaint
the drawers as much as you want and have fun with it, and most importantly dont be afraid.

I hope my tips can encourage you to give it a try.

SEARS BONNET DRESSER french provincial inspiration

I refurbished a vintage Bonnet Dresser available back in the day at Sears. These dressers and the matching pieces were hugely popular with moms and kids from the late sixties all the way into the early eighties. Some of the drawers on this one were not working well or were missing parts so I fixed them and removed the extra detail things from the fronts of the top 3 drawers. I sprayed it in a creamy white and added a new vintage set of Chippendale handles. It looks like there are 12 drawers but really the bottom ones are double deep making for 9 drawers.

If you are looking for a unique set of handles for a large dresser check out the popular
Misfit Chippendale sets listed at Firstfinds Etsy shop. You just never know what will catch your eye:

BIG SOFT ROPE HANDLES nautical beach dresser

Im over the moon in love with this project. I finally got to
create some big fat nautical rope handles on a set of
drawers. And Im here to tell you it took awhile to find nice
soft rope to use instead of thick prickly sisal that is
available everywhere. I went to a tack and feed store,
a boat store, every hardware store I could think of and finally
just gave up. Then one day when I was not looking there it
was right in front of me and youll never guess where.

Michaels Craft Store had it hanging in an isle near the floral foam and glue sticks. Its not cheap
either but a little extra cost doesnt usually get in the way of an amazing transformation or when you
can use a coupon to get it at 40% off.

You can grip the handle right in the middle to pull open a drawer or reach out with
one hand on each knot to open the drawers, either way they glide open beautifully.

A tutorial on how to make these handles can be found at this link:

WHITE INDIA DRESSER repair tips

I wasnt looking to buy any furniture the day
this dresser crossed my path. The lady who
owned it had bought it as a refinishing project
and was told the side panel that was split and
separated was an easy fix. I felt compelled to
save it and the owner, as this is NOT A
SIMPLE FIX for the average refinishing
project.

The two panels have to be leveled out, glued, and clamped back together. Inside I used a couple
of broken metal hinges to stabilize the fix. The hinges are not the solution to holding the panels
together, rather they hold everything in place while the glue sets.

Once everything was fixed she got painted in a creamy white ASCP,
and new India bone knobs added. I found the six of them at my local HomeSense.
The plates you see behind the knobs are antique metal pieces also painted in the
same creamy white ASCP then wet distressed.

Everything was lightly edged distressed and the three drawers were lined with a floral
black and white wallpaper.
