How To Build A Storage Shed In 10 Steps

So you need a new storage shed to keep your lawnmower and tools properly protected, and store all that stuff you keep accumulating. Youve shopped around, done your homework, but the kits and pre-built sheds are too expensive, or just dont suit your needs. No problem. You can build it yourself, even if youre not a carpenter. All you need to do is follow some quick and easy steps, and you will have your new shed in no time.

Step One
Determine the location where you want to build your shed. You need to have sufficient space to build the size you want, make sure it will be accessible, and still put it in a spot where its out of the way.

Step Two
Once you pick your spot and know what size shed you want, you need to come up with some good plans. One option is the internet. There are plenty of good shed plans online you can purchase and download. Another option is to draw up a rough sketch of what you want. Many home improvement stores can take your sketch and draft up your storage shed plans according to the specs you provide. They can also supply you with a list of materials that youll need, and a guide on how to perform each step.

Step Three
Now that you have your plans, its time to purchase the materials and supplies youll need . A good idea is to have everything organized and on hand, so you wont have to keep running out for supplies once you start construction.

Step Four
Time to get started. Based on the plans you chose, youve already decided whether you will use a wood plank floor, or concrete slab. So at this point youll need to level and prep the ground, and construct or lay the foundation.

Step Five
Next are the side walls. Organize and set aside the materials for each side wall. Its easier to construct the walls on the ground, then lift them into position once theyve been built. Just follow your plans and guide for the how to instructions.

Step Six
Now its time to start on the roof structure. You will need to build your trusses. Construct the first one, then use it as a template for the rest of them. Again, follow your guide on how to build the trusses.

Step Seven
Your storage shed is starting to take shape. Its time now to build the end walls. Your entrance and door(s) will be located in an end wall, or maybe both.. Be sure to stay with your original plans.

Step Eight
Youre getting down to the final steps now. The trim is an important part of your structure. Its what gives it that finished professional look so dont scrimp here. Your goal is an aesthetically pleasing structure, perhaps with a paint scheme matching your house, not an eyesore.

Step Nine
Step nine is actually your last two steps: applying the roof shingles, and treating the wood. The wood needs to have some type of protective coating on it to protect it from the elements and rotting. This can be varnish, stain, paint or siding, depending on your climate and preference.

Step Ten
Have a cold drink and relax. Youre done! Time to sit back, pat yourself on the back, and admire your completed storage shed. If youve followed the plans and instruction guide correctly, it should look like it was professionally built.
